FAQ

Find answers to common questions about AK Concrete Staining’s services, including concrete polishing, coatings, grinding, and resurfacing. Learn how our high‑performance flooring solutions serve residential, commercial, and industrial clients across West Michigan.

Why should I choose polished concrete?

Polished concrete is one of the most durable and low-maintenance flooring options available. It uses your existing slab, offers a wide range of coloring and finishing choices, resists stains and moisture, and helps improve indoor air quality by reducing dust, allergens, and mold compared to carpet.

When is the best time to polish floors during construction?

For new builds, the ideal time is after load-bearing walls are in place and the structure is “dried in.” The concrete should also be cured for at least 30 days, with water and heat properly managed before polishing begins.

What are the options for residential flooring?
  • New Floors: Endless design possibilities, including glass broadcasting, integral coloring, and custom aggregate mixes.

  • Existing Slabs: Choices include light or deep grind aggregate exposure, acid staining or dyeing for color, high or low sheen finishes, and decorative scoring for unique patterns.

What are the options for industrial flooring?

Industrial polishing can:

  • Eliminate trip hazards and uneven surfaces.

  • Improve cleanability and performance.

  • Enhance light reflectivity, reducing energy costs. Our process can restore deteriorating floors, often delivering a long-lasting solution at a lower cost than full replacement.

Do you offer custom finishes for concrete?

Yes! We can create nearly any design you imagine, including stenciled patterns, decorative scoring, and even glow-in-the-dark aggregates.

What is the process like from start to finish?

Concrete polishing involves grinding, which can be messy. We use a wet process that creates slurry, eliminating silica dust exposure compared to dry methods. Once complete, we thoroughly clean the area, leaving it better than we found it.

How does the pricing for concrete finishing compare with other flooring?

Polished concrete is generally priced similarly to tile. Costs vary depending on project size, accessibility, and specific design choices.

What do I need to do to maintain my concrete finished floors?

Maintenance is simple: use a properly diluted neutral pH cleaner with a mop pad. We provide every customer with a cleaning kit, instructions, and guidance on purchasing equipment for larger spaces.

What is the process and timeframe for garage floor coating?

Our garage floor coating process includes mechanical grinding, patching, joint filling, and shot blasting before applying the coating. Because of this thorough preparation, we offer a full warranty against delamination. A typical 2–3 stall garage takes about 2–3 days to complete.
